Chapter ninteen

Chapter 19: Storm

I watched Fire turn to the cave’s entrance. I glanced at Ethan, who was looking there, also. We’d had enough crap today. Could you insanes leave us alone for, like, five minutes?
Without any warning, a giant dust cloud covered the cave, leaving us coughing and wheezing. Maybe they were more insane than I’d even thought.
When the cloud cleared, I did a quick head count. Kage was dead, Ares and Kichi were missing, and Fire had joined. But there were only four of us, plus me, minus Ares and Kichi. Ethan had come in, looking tired, before Fire had joined us.
Anyways, there were only four of us total. I was worried about where in the world Ares and Kichi were, but then realized we had bigger problems at hand. Nicole and Shelby were gone; I heard the sound of a chopper. Crap.
I ran out of the cave to see a few trucks and the chopper, now rising into the air. It took me about two seconds to figure out what had happened: Inside was Shelby and Nicole, and possibly Kichi or Ares.
“We have to get them,” I whispered.
Adara shook her head and said, “We can’t. Not now, not ever.”
And I believed her.

Turns out Ares and Kichi weren’t far away. They were hiding behind a tree, watching the whole scene. Kichi had been taken, but had quickly escaped the chopper which she was being held in. Ares had seen Kage being killed.
Now it was just the six of us. On our own. With no place to go.
As I was thinking of places to go, maybe just for the night, there was a soft rusting in the trees to my left. I’d thought that all the insanes had gone once they’d gotten Nicole and Shelby. Well, obviously, I was wrong.

The man looked down at me: I was thirteen, he was a grown man, holding a knife. I could outmatch him by a lot. In fact, I had the power of weather over him. I don’t think he’d really enjoy being run over by a…say, tornado.
There were six of them, one for each of us. Everyone was in “battle” with their insane, except me. Adara was freezing her guy, kicking him, then letting him go. Then she repeated. For Ethan, it was easy: Turn into a lion, scratch with claws. (The scientist might need a Band-Aid for that. Actually, lots of them.)
Fire was—well, firing at the female scientist.
Ares was punching his guy—probably with super strength or something. I’d lost track of his countless powers.
Kichi was reading her guy’s mind to figure out his next move, and then she’d dodge it. It was really funny, actually.
The man who was looking at me, I recognized. He was the leader of the science agency. He was also holding—yes, this feeble weapon—a knife and looking down at me, eyes declaring I was dead meat. I raised my eyebrows and shot a bolt of lightning at him, enjoying his scream of pain. This was going to be fun.
