Chapter twelve (oops messed up last title)

Chapter 12: Storm

I was tired, but I had to get out of the stupid cage. But what to break the lock with….? Ah! Lightning. Lately, that’d been my answer to every freaking problem I’d had. But what can I say? It’s handy!
Concentrating, I aimed for the lock, and a bolt shot from my fingers. Not wanting to touch the bars, I pushed the door open with wind. I stood and stretched.
I ran down the white hallway, and found all my friends sleeping. Or at least I hoped sleeping. I noticed two of them were empty. Crap.
Did they kill Ares and Ethan? Were they invisible? Were they in a different hallway now? I didn’t know. What I did know was that I had to find them, and then we would reunite and get out of this death trap.
Running farther down the hallway, I stopped at a door that was slightly ajar. I glanced around, making sure no one saw me, and went inside. I gasped. Ethan and Ares were in a cage (what a surprise!). They looked tired and sad. I could tell they had been tested on by their eyes. Mutants always get that look in their eyes after they have been ‘worked on’
Ethan was awake, so he shook Ares. Soon, they were both up and I was trying to open the cage. Only problem was that there were like, 20!
I was about halfway done when Ares gasped, a look of horror on his face. He was glancing behind me, and, sadly, I knew that look. Someone—Someone bad was behind me.
I whirled around, feeling like I was going to puke. I swallowed hard when I saw a male scientist behind me. But it wasn’t him that scared me. It was what he was holding: A needle, full with glowing violet liquid.
Before I could react, however, he jammed it into my shoulder. It felt like fire, burning me and running through my veins.
I fell to my knees, screaming. I blacked out when I saw the scientist leaving. (I never knew why he left, though. Why leave an unconscious girl who can shock you with lightning alone?)

When I woke, my vision was fuzzy. My shoulder was really sore. There was a different scientist standing over me. This one looked, possibly, less insane. But don’t judge a book by its cover, you know?
She helped me stand up before she began to speak.
She said, “Alina,” I gritted my teeth. They just loved to annoy me, didn’t they?
“That potion John just put into your shoulder…It gave you another ability.” she finished.
I stared at her. Why on earth would they want to give a category four mutant another power. Sometimes, I wonder about those insane people we call scientists.
“What can I do?” I said through clenched teeth.
She looked at me and sighed. “You can…control what you look like. Your hair, skin, and eye color.”
I stared at her again. That was about the most pointless skill I’d ever heard of. Why the heck did it matter what I looked like? Once again: INSANE!
“This was just a test to see if it worked. You are joining Ethan and…Ares here.” she said, pushing me into their cage. Then, she put something on my arm that burned like crazy, worse than the pointless-power-potion.
It burned so bad that I blacked out (again) and curled into a little ball of pain and sadness.

When I woke, it was to someone speaking over a loudspeaker. “All mutants will be let out into the electric-fenced-in yard to get some fresh air.” he droned.
Ethan and Ares looked at me, and I knew exactly what they were thinking: Electric.
I grinned as John the Scientist came to get us.
Escaping would be just too easy.

The electric fence was sparking at the top, but I wasn’t scared.
Ethan and Ares were behind me, explaining what had happened to us. When we had joined the others, everyone had stared at me: I was a blonde with violet eyes. Their faces were hilarious!
I scanned the top of the fence, hoping for an on/off switch. No go. I checked the bottom, and—bingo! There was a button, and it, too was sparking like crazy.
Nervous, my hand glided toward it. I pushed it, and my fingers felt all tingly. I even felt tingly in my chest.
I motioned the others over and pushed the gate door open. Silently, we rushed out, under cover of the darkness. We were free. Or so I hoped.

Twigs broke under my feet, but I didn’t care. Freedom was worth it. I was in the lead, hoping for a shelter for the night, and then we would move to another location.
Bang! Bang! I heard the sound of gunshot. Crap.
Behind me, I heard a small cry of pain from Adara. Kage grabbed her, and they ran together.
Ethan ran ahead of me, as a cougar, and led us to a cave. It was okay, but just for the night.
“Yeah, ‘cause the last time we lived in a cave went so well.” Shelby said, rolling her eyes.
“Shh!” I said. We didn’t want the gun-dudes to find us.
Kage set Adara on the floor, and I gasped.
